I think you’ve developed a valuable resource. However, because it is so comprehensive, I wonder how effective it is in mobilizing people to connect around any particular issue. I see that there are hundreds of groups, but many with just a few people. Unless these groups grow, or find ways to connect with others focusing on similar issues, they won’t have the power that is possible with so many like minded organizations meeting on the same web platform.
In the world map, have you ever tried creating sort fields, by category, so that you could view a map and just see organizations working with a specific issue? Such maps would seem to be a great navigation tool to help people choose what cause, what location, and then what group or organization they might want to get involved with. It also might encourage collaboration among groups doing similar work in the same area, or in areas all over the world.
I’m using maps to focus on a single issue, and a single purpose. My aim is to help volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs grow in high poverty areas of big cities like Chicago. At http://www.tutormentorprogramlocator.net/InteractiveMap.aspx you can see a new service we launched this week to support this process. This is an upgrade from a Program Locator we’ve had on line since 2003.
The purpose of this focus is that we need to draw millions of readers to each cause, who distribute to the web sites of each organization working in the cause, and who become volunteers, donors, advocates, etc. If we can’t help improve the flow and distribution of resources we won’t make much of a dent on the social,health and environmental problems that exist.

@Dan: A number of people have suggested a better filtering of map results for WiserEarth and I completely agree our mapping interface needs to improve by leaps and bounds. We’ll probably be working on this over the next couple of months. Do you want to be a beta-tester?
